Primary School Safety Training- R.U.D.E

We’re not rude, we’re R.U.D.E!!!

Dear Sir/Ma’am,
My name is Dean Coady OBE; I am a former soldier, Police Officer and Parent. I have been delivering Safeguarding Training in response to street- based crime to teachers, police, social workers, charities and children all across the UK for the last 30 years. My usual young learner cohort ranges from 11 to 17 years of age.

However, I was recently contacted by a school that were having some challenges in relation to inappropriate remarks and unkind behavior, that had been demonstrated by Key Stage 2 children. When reviewed, it became apparent that some of this was due to a lack of awareness of;
Respect, Understanding, Dangers (from the street) and Equality. (R.U.D.E)

I was asked to design and deliver an age –appropriate interactive lesson to address these topics and based on this, I researched, designed and subsequently delivered my session; ‘We’re not rude, we’re R.U.D.E

This is a one-hour, highly interactive lesson, designed for groups of Primary school children for year 5 and 6, whereby each aspect of R.U.D.E is discussed, in an age appropriate and sensitive manner.

During the session, young learners are encouraged to speak honestly in relation to their knowledge of each of these subjects and I work with the class to share with them, what is acceptable and in keeping with community and school values.

We explore what ‘Respect’ and ‘Understanding’ are and how these apply to them. We also discuss generic street-based ‘Dangers’ to identify what hazards or threats the children feel may affect them in their daily lives. As a result of what they say, I give some clear direction of how they can recognise and respond in potential harmful situations.

The ‘Equality’ section of this lesson is to introduce/encourage cultural acceptance and the celebration of our diverse communities. This learning is complimented by me bringing in items that other children from around the world have made for me. Wood and stone carvings from Africa, pottery from South America, head-dresses and currency from all over the world. This helps the children to understand that diversity that exists throughout the UK.

This content also very much reflects the Prevent Guidance of ‘British Values’ and could be viewed as an early Prevent training session, PHSE learning, Diversity and Equality introduction or Street-Crime awareness. Very much in line with Ofsted’s guidance. It also provides a platform for young people to say what is actually causing them worry or fear on the streets.

Many families are trying to get out of countries affected by wars, and travel to other countries where they will be safe. Do you know what these people are called?

We’re not rude, ! we’re R.U.D.E !!!!
